Cactus to Clouds

Hiking to the 11,000-foot peak of the Cactus to Clouds hike in Palm Springs is quite a hiking challenge. The hike is recommended for more experienced hikers because of the altitude climb,d distance and terrain. The hike starts on the desert floor of Palm Springs and climbs to the top of the San Jacinto Peak, one of the highest mountains in Southern California. The hike includes a 16 mile ascent and six mile descent that leads you to a tram for the remainder of the trip back down. Because of the altitude changes, there are temperature variations in the hike and snowfall is common. Parking is available at Remon Road and Museum Drive, offering two trailheads with access to the trail. The tram is a great feature of this hike because it allows you to enjoy the trip up without having to worry about a complete descent. The tram is kept in good working condition and because the weather can change quickly at the top, it offers hikers a great alternative if they are not prepared for a snowy, difficult conclusion to their hike. Experienced hikers recommend getting started on the hike as early as possible to avoid the extreme heat. Bring plenty of water for your trip. The best time for hiking is during the fall months of October and November, and in later spring during May.
