Columns of the Giants

The Columns of the Giants are located to the west of Pinecrest, CA in the Middle Fork Stanislaus River Canyon. The columns are tall, hexagonal rock formations created roughly 100,000 years ago. The rock is made of volcanic basalt that was created when the lava was quickly cooled by glacier ice.

These rock piles are a smaller version of the Devil's Postpile National Monument columns. Hikers can enjoy the view of these impressive formations, as well as local wildlife, and discover other natural sights along the way.

As part of the Stanislaus National forest, the trailhead is near the Pigeon Flat Campground on Highway 108, and offers an easy quarter mile hike (about half a mile round trip) along the Stanislaus River ending at the base of a massive rock pile with the columns situated above. Adventurous trekkers can climb to the top of the 400 foot thick basalt formation.

The Pinecrest campground, near Pinecrest Lake, is 30 miles east of Sonora and just east of rock formation. It provides a convenient place to stay while visiting the Columns and other points of interest.

Other Stanislaus National Forest attractions include 800 miles of rivers, for fishing and swimming, campgrounds, rafting and canoeing in one of the many lakes. Horseback riding, mountain biking and snowmobiles are additional options.
