Donner Memorial State Park and Emigrant Trail Museum

Donner Memorial State Park is located in Truckee, California. It was named after the Donner Party. As part of the state park there is the Emigrant Trail Museum and Pioneer Monument. Visitors can look at the Donner Camp near Alder Creek. The Donner Family was trapped in winter of 1846 to 1847. They did not have supplies, thus they had to resort to cannibalism.

The park is 2.5 miles with several hiking trails and campgrounds. There is also the 3 mile section of Donner Lake to visit. The Emigrant Trail Museum has cultural history based on Native Americans, Donner Party, and the railroad. The museum is located at the Pioneer Monument, as well as the family cabin. A trail begins at 200 yards from the museum near a granite boulder. Visitors can enjoy the trail and remember the Donner Party. There are a couple of plaques stating what happened, who survived, and information regarding the heroism of certain members.

Donner Memorial State Park struggled due to budget cuts in the last few years; however, the park is still open despite the financial difficulties they do have. Mostly the park is open with trails for public tours.
