Oakland Museum

Located across the street from Laney College and a block or two from Lake Merritt, the Oakland Museum displays the history of California through art, natural history, science.

Established in 1969, the museum houses over 1.8 million artifacts that tell the story of California and its people. The Oakland Museum aspires to educate and connect communities through historic collections and educational programs. The museum explores and analyzes the factors that have shaped the development of culture, history, and science of California.

The museum opens for visitors Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The museum stays open until 8:00 p.m. on Fridays. The Oakland Museum contains a store that sells unique crafts, California art, books, and other items in 2,000 square feet of space. Visitors can dine on light fare at Blue Oak, which is led by award-winning chef, Robert Dorsey III. The café has a lunch, snack, and beverage menu that includes cuisine incorporating the varied cultures of California.

The Oakland Museum is located less than 10 miles north of Oakland International Airport. A short distance away from the museum, tourists can enjoy a gondola ride, Lakeside Park, Golden Gate Bonsai Collection, or the Children's Fairyland, the Paramount Theatre, Jack London Square, Chinatown, the Camron-Stanford House, and Oakland Ice Center.
