Perimeter Road

The Perimeter Road Trail winds around Angel Island in the Bay Area of California. The trail leads hikers to all of the historical sites on the island including the Immigration Station. Hikers also get great views of the bay and the City of San Francisco along most parts of the trail. There are a number of picnic sites along the trail and throughout the island, offering hikers a place to take a break and have a snack or lunch during or after their hike. Angel Island can be reached by private boats or commercial ferries and it is the largest island in the area. There is a visitor's center on the north side of the island, as well as park headquarters where visitors can get maps and history of the island. The Ranger's Kiosk offers a gift shop and small café. The island was once used as a hunting and fishing site for the Coastal Miwok Indians. Later is became the home of Juan Manuel de Ayala, a Spanish Explorer, and then a post for the U.S. Army during the Civil War. During the early 20th century, the island was a processing center for immigrants from China. German and Japanese prisoners of war were held on the island during World War II.
