Playhouse District


The Playhouse District is a popular area to visit and live in Pasadena, California. In addition to being rich with history, the area is alive with a cultural twist. It is located in Downtown Pasadena between the South Lake District and Old Pasadena, covering 34 city blocks. The area offers art galleries, world-class theatres, highly-rated dining establishments, cultural facilities and a lot more. Theatres include the Boston Court Performing Arts Complex, the Furious Theatre and the Pasadena Playhouse. Many of the area restaurants offer dining and show packages that make for a fun night out. Galleries offers a variety of art displays and visitors can tour the Pacific Asia Museum or the Pasadena Muse of California Art. Another popular destination in the area is Vroman's, the state's oldest and largest independent bookseller. The store has been open and selling books since 1894. The Playhouse District came into being during the roaring 1920's when business, retail establishments and cultural outlets began springing p in the area. It became a part of the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. Visitors can take a walking tour of the area that is self-guided and enables you to learn about the history of the area, as well as explore the architecture in the district. The tour usually takes less than an hour. In addition to the theatres, restaurants, galleries and shops in the area, the area is also home to the California School of Culinary Arts, the Fuller Seminary and the California Institute of Technology.
