Poly Canyon Loop

The Poly Canyon Loop is one of the most well-known bike rides in California. The Poly Canyon is the hub for a variety of paths but the Southern Pacific Railroad separates it from a variety of other rides. There are people who ride on the tracks, but it is not very safe and not recommended by officials in the area. The Poly Canyon is an eight mile loop and relatively simple for riders of all abilities and experience. The trail starts in the upper parking lot of the Cal Poly school, where bikers can park and unload. Some of the areas are restricted for non-students, so watch the signs closely and get a parking pass if one is required. The ride begins on pavement and becomes a fire road that leads to an archway of stone. Riders should bear to the left of the arch through the gates. There is a descent and then a climb which leads to a dirty slide and climb. Around the for mile mark riders reach Stenner Ranch. If you jump the railroad tracks round this area you end up riding the Shooters trail. Follow the path back around to the paved area and you will end up back at Cal Poly. The path is great for novice riders and riders with kids in tow since much of it is set on wide fire roads and the path features less than moderate climbs. Hikers and joggers also travel the trail, so be careful when you are biking, especially during the descents and turns.
