Rocking Stone Tower

Rocking Stone Tower is located on Commercial Row in High Street, Truckee, California and is approximately 107 miles from Sacramento International Airport. This tourist attraction is free to view and is essentially a 17-ton rock with a tower built on top. The huge stone no longer rocks but is still considered as one of the 25 known rocking stones in the world.

The rock was considered sacred by the Washoe and one of the early tribes chipped away the rock in order to flatten the top and curve the bottom. This was to stop animals getting at the food served on the top during ceremonies. The flat top enabled the tower to be erected, which can now be accessed by tourists via steps at the back of the rock.

The current structure on top of the rock is different to the original constructed in 1895 and is a series of columns with a roof on top. A plaque on the rock explains more about its history and that of the tower, which was a stop for the Olympic Torch in 1960. Next to the rock is the Veterans Memorial Building where town meetings, dances, parties and other gatherings are held.
