New York City Police Museum

Residing at the south end of Manhattan, the New York City Police Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the most famous police force in the world. The museum displays the history and evolution of the New York City Police Department through exhibits, collections, and educational programs.

The museum includes artifacts that date back to the Dutch settlers and illustrates the impact the NYPD has had on the local community over its history. Visitors can also learn why officers are called "cops," why their bosses are called "brass," and why police precincts have green lights outside their buildings.

The museum opens for guests from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. The museum is closed on National holidays. The museum also features a gift shop where visitors can buy NYPD paraphernalia.

The New York City Police Museum is located on Wall Street about 15 to 20 minutes west of LaGuardia International Airport. It is within walking distance of the NYSE, Federal Reserve Bank, and the World Trade Center. Other local destinations include Staten Island Ferry, National Museum of the American Indian, and Federal Hall. A short drive will take tourists to all the hot spots in downtown Manhattan surrounding Times Square.
