Oregon's first newspaper was the weekly Oregon Spectator, which began publication in 1846. Early newspapers engaged in what became known as the "Oregon style" of journalism, characterized by intemperate, vituperative, and fiercely partisan comments. As of 2002, 6 morning, 14 evening, and 11 Sunday newspapers were published in Oregon. The state's largest newspaper, the Oregonian, published in Portland, is owned by Advance Publications.
