Remarks: FLOCK OF LRG BIRDS FLEW UP IN FRONT OF A/C WHILE TURNING DOWNWIND TO LAND. I TRIED TO AVOID THEM BUT HIT 1.FELT LIKE A/C WAS GOING TO FALL. IT WALLOWED. SAW METAL CURLED UP AND HANGING OUT OF WING. MADE EMERG LDG. DMG AFFECTED FLT CONTROL & ABILITY TO MAINTAIN ALT & AIRSPEED. L WING DROPPED DOWN AND A/C TOUCHED DOWN ON L MAIN LDG GEAR. BOUNCED BACK INTO AIR & CAME DOWN ON RWY. A/C VEERED TO LEFT & STUDENT PILOT LOST DIRECTIONAL CONTROL. PLANE WENT OFF L SIDE OF RWY INTO GRASS, HIT A DITCH AND NOSED OVER INVERTED. PROP WAS DMGD. BOTH WINGS & FIREWALL HAD SUBSTANTIAL DMG. ESTMATE 3 MOS. OUT OF SVC. OTHER COST IS FOR 3 MOS OF LOST REVENUE.
