Codfish Creek Trail

The Codfish Creek Trail, near Weimar, CA, is midway between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe off of Interstate 80. As part of the Auburn State Recreation Area, the 1.4 mile trail follows the North Fork American River and ends at Codfish Creek. Upstream a short distance from the creek there is another trail that leads to the top of a 50-foot waterfall.

The well maintained trail is a fairly easy round trip walk of 2.8 miles and takes about 1.5 hours to complete. The best time to visit this trail is during spring and winter. In the summer, it is not uncommon for the waterfall to dry up; however, in the springtime, several species of butterflies and wildflowers can be found along the way to the waterfall.

To reach the trailhead from Auburn, visitors should travel along State Highway 80 to Weimar. Please note that the last 2.5 miles on Ponderosa Way, which leads to the trailhead, is a very rough dirt road. Vehicles with high clearance are recommended.

In addition to the Codfish Creek and its other numerous trails, the Auburn State Recreation Area in the heart of gold country hosts many other activities: swimming, boating, fishing, camping, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, mountain bike riding, panning for gold, etc.
