Dunsmuir House

Dunsmuir House in Oakland, California is a manor house built in 1899. It has 37 rooms in a Neoclassical Revival style. It sits on 50 acres, which are all landscaped. The estate is an old fashioned place that offers pond and gazebo for beauty. The mansion and grounds are often used for weddings given the beauty and warm temperatures offered. Dunsmuir House is set up as an educational, entertainment, and cultural center.

Tours are available throughout the year and led by docents. The docents are volunteers who work on the grounds and in the mansion. They offer a half hour to hour tour of the grounds from April to September. Typically, the first Sunday of every month at 1pm and 2pm the tours are available. They also have one tour on Wednesdays at 11am. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for children and seniors. The grounds are free of charge and open year round for those who wish to stroll or take a picnic lunch. However, if an event is going on the grounds may be closed to the public. Dunsmuir Hellman Historic Estate was built by Alexander Dunsmuir after he moved to California in 1878. He was the son of Robert Dunsmuir, a wealthy coal baron.
