Half Dome

Half Dome is 5,000 feet above Yosemite Valley in California. It also makes it 8,000 feet above sea level. Half Dome is one of the more popular areas to hike in the Yosemite area. Since 1865 people have wanted to see Half Dome and hike it. George Anderson was the first to reach the summit in 1875, ten years after the dome's discovery.

Today there is a cable route for those who do not wish to hike it. Thousands of people stand on the summit each year. Hiking takes 14 to 16 miles round trip based on the route one takes. An elevation gain of 4,800 feet to the summit means one has to be in shape and prepared for the strenuous hike. It is not for everyone. During the hike visitors will be able to spy Vernal and Nevada Falls, Half Dome's wildlife, and Liberty Cap. At the summit views of Yosemite Valley and High Sierra are possible. Holidays and weekends are the busiest time of year for this hike. It will take at least 10 to 12 hours to make the round trip, requiring visitors to begin early in the morning and have a flashlight for the evening hours. A headlamp is even suggested.
