Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park

Located in the Sierra Nevada foothills about eight miles east of Jackson, the Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park was created in 1968 and occupies a small valley at 2,400 feet above sea level. It is marked by meadows and large valley oaks, which were once a source of acorns for Native Americans who lived in this area. One of its landmark features is a huge outcropping of marbleized bedrock limestone that contains an estimated 1,185 mortar holes the most in North America.

Among the many facilities available at the park are 23 campgrounds, one of which has seven bark houses that require advance reservations. Two developed trails can be hiked the mile-long North Trail and the half-mile South Trail, which offers a self-guided nature hike. The Chaw'se Regional Indian Museum is also on site, featuring exhibits and collections of Sierra Nevada Indian artifacts, plus a reconstruction of a Miwok village with a ceremonial roundhouse.

Open from sunrise to sunset daily, Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park is located northeast of Stockton at 14881 Pine Grove Volcano Road, Pine Grove, California 95665. Its campgrounds are in operation from March 15 till November 15 and a nightly camping fee of $25 is required. Museum hours are from 11am to 2:30pm on Thursdays, Fridays and Mondays and 10am to 3:30pm on weekends.
