Klamath River

The Klamath River runs through Northern California, through Crescent City. It was named for an Indian tribe by European settlers in the 19th century. The river actually runs through both California and Oregon. Tributaries include Shasta River, Scott River, Salmon River, and Trinity River. It starts at Klamath Falls working its way through California. The upper elevation is 4,090 feet at Upper Klamath Lake where the river begins. It then runs to the Pacific Ocean.

It discharges roughly 17,000 cubic feet per second, though it has been known to put out 583,000 cubic feet per second, and as little as 1,340 cubic feet per second. The basin is 15,751 square miles, with a total length of 263 miles for the river. It actually runs through the Cascade Mountains, which is a temperate rainforest. It is known for its fish. For many centuries the Klamath River was used as a place to fish for food. Now it is more for recreational fun and those who enjoy eating the types of river fish that can be caught there.

Recreational activities include white water rafting, kayaking, and swimming during summer. Recreational gold mining has also been popular near Salmon and Trinity tributaries.
