Lanfair Valley

Located in the Mojave National Preserve, Lanfair Valley is the site of the Lanfair ghost town. Lanfair Valley sits in the southeastern corner of California near the Nevada state line.

Surrounded on three sides by mountain ranges New York and Castle mountains on the north, Piute mountains on the east, and the Woods mountains on the south Lanfair Valley is dotted by Joshua Trees and the home of the Grotto Hills and the Lanfair Buttes.

A trail from Lanfair Valley to Fort Piute runs along the westward trail of pioneers in one section and offers a view of the only continuously flowing stream in the eastern Mojave Desert. In addition, hikers can sight geological features, native plant life, and petroglyphs.

The valley and ghost town were named after Ernest L. Lanfair, a former land owner in the valley. The city of Lanfair, abandoned today was once thriving with post office, schools, farms, and a railroad. Today the city of Lanfair is in ruins. A second ghost town, The Hart, lies in the northeast corner of the valley.

Lanfair Valley is located 90 miles south of Las Vegas. Within 30 miles of Lanfair Valley there are a number of other tourist attractions: Providence Mountains State Recreation Area, Eldorado Canyon Mine Tours, various campgrounds, and casinos.
