Living Desert Zoo & Gardens

Located about 10 miles southeast of Palm Springs, Living Desert Zoo and Gardens promotes conservation of the local desert through education, preservation, and appreciation. They have been fulfilling this mission since 1970, when several trustees of the Palm Desert Museum founded this establishment. The grounds have expanded from an initial 360 acres to 1,800 acres, 1,000 of which remains in its original state.

The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens features desert climates and wildlife from around the world and offers activities, such as a Discovery Center, Camel Rides, Wildlife Wonders Show, and a Merry-Go-Round.

From October 1 to May 31, the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, located at 47900 Portola Ave, Palm Desert, CA, opens daily at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 5:00 p.m. During summer months (June 1 through September 30), the zoo opens daily from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. On the grounds, visitors will found conveniently located restrooms and drinking fountains, shaded areas along the trails, a few restaurants, and a gift shop.

Living Desert Zoo and Gardens is a scenic drive of a few hours from either Los Angeles International Airport or San Diego Airport. Located nearby are the Mojave Resort, Palm Desert Visitor Center, Empire Polo Club, and several adventure tour outfitters.
