The Point Vicente Interpretive Center

The Point Vicente Interpretive Center offers visitors views of the area from an historic destination. The center is set on the site of a former Nike Missile Base and the area is surrounding the city's civic center. On the grounds is a tennis court, volleyball court and grassy areas. The site is where the Rancho Palos Verdes annual Independence Day celebration is held. The park is located adjacent to the Point Vicente Lighthouse, which is one of the most scenic vistas in the area. Photographers and brides love the area for photos on the big day. The Interpretive Center on the grounds has been open since 1984. It offers a place where people can enjoy the presentation and interpretation of the unique features of the area and the city's history. The center is about 10,000 square feet in size and features a variety of exhibits concerning the cultural and natural history of the area. The main focus on the center is educating visitors concerning the Pacific gray whale. The peninsula is an excellent place to watch the migration of the whales, lasting from December until April. Volunteers lead tours around the center, making it an ideal destination for school trips, curious nature lovers and those interested in learning more about the great whale.
