This is the final post of our series on the changes in business profiles of the four United States regions. This time we use the County Business Patterns data to see which industry sectors in the Northeast have shown the largest changes in the employment numbers.
Despite the Northeastern states having the smallest total population of all four regions, it is very densely populated. In fact, seven states with the highest population density are located in the region.
Below is the map showing the average payroll in the region by county.
In examining the changes to the region’s business profile, we see that the sector which lost the most jobs (almost 50,000) in five years is Educational Services. Note that as usual in this series of posts, we adjusted the data to exclude any nationwide changes — the reason being that we are focused on any local changes.
Specialty Trade Contractors and Food Services saw the largest increases in the total workforce. Also notable are the 12 percent increase in Amusement, Gambling and Recreation and the over 20 percent increases in the two construction-related sectors.

I am taking a course in data science at JHU via Coursera. I am interested in using the data for cities from city-data.com for case studies and using R Programming. Is it possible to get the city-data as a zip file? Thanks.
