Growing revenues of fitness clubs

The United States of America is a well-known fitness country. In 2014, more than 54 million American people belonged to at least one of the 34,460 health clubs nationwide. The number of health clubs and fitness centers in the country is growing each year. The total number of gyms in 2013 was 32,150, compared to 30,500 in 2012. There was a slight increase from 2009 to 2011: from 29,750 to 29,960. Healthy and active living is inspiring; more and more people are buying memberships at gyms. The number of membership at fitness centers and health clubs is growing also: it was 54.1 million people in 2014, up from 52.9 million people in 2013.

Fitness clubs and health centers have sustainable and high revenues due to people who buy memberships. In 2012, revenues of fitness and recreational sport centers in the United States reached $24.549 billion, which was a remarkable growth comparing to the previous year. Just to compare, fitness clubs’ revenues in 2010 were approximately to $22.542 billion. According to the forecast up until 2020 published at Statista.com, by the end of 2016 revenues of fitness clubs and recreational sport centers are projected to reach $29.418 billion, so the numbers would grow further in the next few years. In 2017, fitness clubs revenues would be around $29.498 billion. In 2018 and 2019 the rates would be approximately $29.973 billion and $29.518 billion respectively. The peak will be reached in 2020, when the revenues of fitness clubs and recreational centers would reach over $30.5 billion.

In the modern world, Americans can work on fitness while staying inside their house. Just using the Internet everyone can download or use mobile health or fitness apps. According to 2014 research at Statista.com, about 25 percent of American Internet users used health or fitness apps several times daily. More than 40 percent accessed apps at least once daily and 18 percent used fitness apps on a weekly basis. Only 2 percent used health or fitness apps monthly or rarely. The percentage of Internet users who used mobile health or fitness apps occasionally was 6 percent in 2014, and the rate of Internet users who never used such apps was only 1 percent.
