Grand theft auto cases in the United States

According to Statista.com, the number of motor vehicle theft cases in the United States is decreasing every year. Thus, there is a huge difference between 1990 and 2000 — the number decreased from 1,635,900 cases to 1,160,002 cases in the country overall. In 2005, an estimated 1,235,859 cases occurred nationwide. By 2010 the number of reported motor vehicle theft cases fell to 739,565. The numbers of car theft cases in 2011 and 2012 approximated to 716,508 and 723,186 respectively. In 2013 the number of motor vehicle theft cases amounted to 700,288 cases, and 689,527 cases in 2014.

If we have a look at the graph showing the percentage distribution of motor vehicle theft cases in the United States in 2014 by type and region, we can see that the highest percent of the stolen vehicles belongs to autos. In 2014, about 74.5 percent of stolen vehicles in the United States were autos, while almost 15 percent were trucks and buses. Other vehicles accounted for 10.6 percent. The highest percent of stolen autos was recorded in Northeast — over 85 percent.

The share of autos stolen in Midwest and South amounted to 76.8 percent and 66 percent accordingly. They were stolen about 78.5 percent of the time in the West as well. Trucks and buses were the victims of theft most often in the South — almost 20 percent of all vehicles stolen.

In 2014, the California was ranked first in total number of vehicle thefts with 151,182 reported cases, followed by Texas with 68,546 cases. Florida was third with more than 42,570 cases of vehicles theft. Next came Washington, where 30,647 vehicles were stolen. The numbers in Georgia and Michigan approximated to 26,854 and 21,157 respectively.
