The financial market is a broad term defining any marketplace where trading of securities such as bonds, equities, currencies and derivatives occurs. In the United States, financial markets consist of many separate markets for diverse products offered across a range of trading platforms and exchanges. The financial markets facilitate a number of components essential to the workings of a market economy (an economy which heavily relies on interactions between buyers and sellers for the allocation of resources).

The stock market plays a major role in the financial market. Probably one of the most famous and well-known stock exchanges in the world is the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Located at 11 Wall Street, Lower Manhattan, New York City, it is by far the largest stock exchange on the planet.

As of March 2017, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was officially ranked the largest stock exchange in the world with a market capitalization of $19.22 trillion. Market capitalization, also known as market cap, is a term that denotes the total value of tradable shares of a listed company. The NASDAQ (National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations) is the second largest stock exchange by market capitalization with the value of its tradable shares amounting to $6.83 trillion.

The London Stock Exchange Group is the third largest stock exchange — the overall tradable value of its shares amounts to $6.19 trillion. China’s top stock exchange, the Shanghai Stock Exchange, has a market capitalization of nearly $4 trillion. Hong Kong Exchanges ranked fifth in market capitalization with $3.33 trillion in total tradable shares, followed by the European company Euronext with $3.32 trillion in market capitalization. Shenzhen Stock Exchange is also a large Chinese stock exchange, with the total value of its shares approximating to $2.29 trillion.
