In our previous post, we analyzed the worldwide popularity of cosmetic procedures, both surgical and nonsurgical. Today we’ll focus on the situation in the United States.

Using data from Statista.com, we analyzed the popularity of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in the U.S. from 1997 to 2017.

Compared to 20 years prior, both types of cosmetic procedures increased in popularity. Surgical procedures went up 50 percent from the year 1997 and amounted to 1.5 million in 2017. Nonsurgical cosmetic procedures skyrocketed, growing more than four times over: 3.2 million were performed in the U.S. in 2017.

Since the U.S. spans quite a large territory and its population density is highly uneven, it is only natural that the popularity and availability of cosmetic procedures can vary greatly across the country. Therefore, we divided the country into nine regions to better visualize these discrepancies. The South Atlantic region alone accounts for 26 percent of all performed cosmetic procedures, followed by the Pacific with 15.4 percent.

Demand for the cosmetic services industry turns out to be quite focused on specific age groups. Nearly 40 percent of all patients are middle-aged, between 35 and 50 years old. Cosmetic procedures are the next most popular among older people in their 50s and early 60s. Young adults under 35 were responsible for an 18 percent share of the total cosmetic procedures performed in 2017.
