In our previous post on cosmetic procedures in the United States, we offered a broad view, examining the geographic and age distributions of cosmetic procedure patients. This time we will explore the procedures themselves.

Using data from Statista.com, we analyzed the popularity of different surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures in the U.S. in 2017.

The most popular cosmetic surgery in the U.S. is breast augmentation: Over 330,000 of these procedures were performed in 2017. Lipoplasty or liposuction came in a close second with over 300,000 operations on record in the same year. Rounding out the top five procedures were eyelid surgery, breast lifts and abdominoplasty — each of these surgeries was performed about 140,000 times.

As for nonsurgical cosmetic procedures, the top two procedures in America by far are botulinum toxin injections and hyaluronic acid treatments. Botulinum injections were administered 1.5 million times, which accounts for over 25 percent of the worldwide total of 5 million of these procedures performed. Next on the list, hyaluronic acid treatments were performed 720,000 times, or 21 percent of the worldwide number of 3.2 million. Non-surgical fat reduction, hair removal and chemical peels complete the top five, although their count is less than 200,000 each, and their combined total is still slightly lower than the number of hyaluronic acid treatments.

Lastly, let’s examine how the popularity of different surgical procedures varies by gender. Apart from the differences due to physiology, it is interesting to note that face lift procedures did not make it into top five list for women; abdominoplasty and eyelid surgery were performed more frequently.
