Who are the U.S. users of Instagram?

According to information about Instagram users published at Statista.com, there were approximately 1000 million active global users of the photo-sharing network in June 2018. If we look at users in the United States, we see that in 2018 the number of monthly active users reached 104.7 million. In comparison, in 2016 and 2017 the number of U.S. users was 69.1 million and 92.6 million respectively.

Future projections show that in 2019 the number of monthly active users will grow to 113.3 million. This number is expected to increase further in 2020, reaching 120.3 million active users in the U.S. According to the forecast, in 2021 and 2022 the overall number of Instagram users in the country will be around 125.7 million and 130.7 million users.

Next, let’s analyze the U.S. users of Instagram by ethnicity — the graph below breaks down the share of U.S. internet users who used Instagram in April 2015 by ethnicity. As we can see, about 47 percent of black non-Hispanic users used the photo-sharing site. During the same period, 21 percent of white non-Hispanics used Instagram. The percentage of Hispanic people who used Instagram in April, 2015 amounted to 38 percent.

Another survey examined how frequently internet users in the U.S. used Instagram in October 2017. During the survey, 9 percent of respondents reported using Instagram about once a month or even less often. About 17 percent of users used the app several times a day, while 8 percent stated that they used it a few times a week. The number of people who didn’t have an account or didn’t use the site amounted to 54 percent.
