proportional elections vs. plurality elections

[SIZE=3]I would like to see proportional voting representation across America. Proportional representation ensures that a voter vote will not be in vain, his or her vote will get a number of his chosen elected party members in an open seat. I believe that the single member plurality system is unfair and does not represent the voting public at all, why does a party win and take all the votes if the other side was about equal in the percentage of the votes for a candidate?
