An Underrated Advantage of Owning a Home

As a REALTOR, I often preach about the advantages of owning your own home. Without a doubt one the great things as King or Queen of your castle is the chance to help out family members with a safe place to stay at the drop of a hat.
With the economy in the crapper according to many, it is these troubling times that make family so important. Sure we all want the best for our offspring and sometimes tough love is called for. My parents did the right thing in showing me the door long ago when I needed a gentle push to step out into the world. But they were willing to let me move back in when I got laid off and needed to get back on my feet.
If you are renting it is quite possible that the landlord will not like you letting a family member move in, even if it for a short period of time. But when you own your home, it is up to you. You will not have to worry about the landlord being a jerk when they find out someone is living in the home that is not on the lease. Of course the landlord has to protect their interests. This does not make your family member's situation any better.
The economy will get better, and it might be stressful for a time. But opening your home to help a family member is a possibility when you own your home. How would you feel if a member of your family asked for help and you had to say no?
