Fear of moving

Posted 10-16-2008 at 10:50 AM by 43bonnie

My husband just left for New York to start training as a postal supervisor. I am still in Wyoming with the kids. We decided to move them at the end of the school year. I need to know what to expect of this move. I am scared to death if we made the right choice to move and the right choice of where to move. I have never lived anywhere outside of Wyoming. Have been all over the US but have never lived anywhere else. And I am terrified about making new friends in Elmira, New York, when I get there. Anyone have any suggestions on how to ease this upcoming move?

I have moved several times in my life to areas where I did not know anyone. I think you will love NY. There will always be a period of adjustment anywhere. Usually takes me about a year before I feel like I belong. But, after that year, I have no regrets and laugh at the fear I had. Keep close with your old friends, don't be afraid to put yourself out there and make new ones, even though it will feel unatural for a while. It just takes time, keep a good attitude, meet your neighbors, find hobbies that you like to do and find others that do them too.

    Thanks beem

Thanks beem. I appreciate all the backup I can get right now. I have such a fear of regret. Regretting leaving the town I've known all my life. Regretting leaving a house I put so much time and energy into redoing. Regretting uprooting my kids to do something I should have done back when I was the only one it influenced. All the backup I can get, I appreciate!!

Dont view it as a scary thing, look at it as a family adventure. Ive also moved a few times, from southern Cali to northern Cali then to Germany when my husband was with the military, then back to Cali and onto Michigan, now *FINALLY* settled and very happy in North Carolina. I dont like to move, other than it gives you a good reason to throw away all the stuff you kept meaning to go through lol However it can be an exciting time, look up and do alot of research on things to do there, what they have to offer that you and you family like to do, and all that. It makes the whole attitude more like "omg i want to move now" instead of the normal "ill do it but i really dont know if i want to". Its all in how you look at it I think. Every city has a ton to offer, especially NY! Itll calm your nerves a whole lot by looking up fun things to do places to see when you get there.

I can totally empathize with you about your upcoming move having moved from the Chicago area to Greenville, South Carolina about 10 months ago. Although I had done some traveling, I had lived my entire life within a 30 mile radius in suburban Chicago.

The first three months I was physically sick and started to think I was allergic to SC and might have to move back. I was also missing all my friends and especially my boyfriend (best relationship I ever had) plus all my favorite hangouts, foods, etc. Sure it was nice to be in a beautiful new home and living near my stepson and grandchildren in a beautiful area, but it was all so new and unfamiliar. It took several months for me to feel comfortable, and I'm still making acquaintances and building a new network of friends while trying to maintain those back home.

I had a chance to visit "home" for two weeks in July and must tell you that I was ready to come back to Greenville after about 1-1/2 hours. All it took was sitting in traffic and driving through a few construction zones, listening to the jets roaring overhead, et cetera. Had a nice visit with my friends, but you could not pay me to move back there now.

Everything isn't perfect here either (nowhere is except maybe Heaven), but I have come to love it, and it's starting to feel like home.

I have a feeling that New York will be far different from Wyoming for you, but I do wish you the best and hope that you settle into your new home as well as I have in mine and that your kids will do well there too.
