Pagan life in the desert

Natural Garbage Disposals

Posted 05-30-2010 at 03:58 PM by razorbladesmiley

We recycle as much as anyone that lives out here in the desert; I'm not referring to people who live in apartment complexes, but to those who live out in the sticks, those who have land. About every two or three weeks, I take the my old Chevy truck full of recyclable plastics, scrap metal--I'm redoing one section of the house, and mostly trash, out to the refuse transfer station just pass Ryan Field. For five bucks, I can dump all kinds of stuff in certain bins.

Paper
For paper products such as cardboard and stuff, I build up this huge bonfire in my fire pit out in the backyard. I mostly make the bonfires that coincide with pagan festivals, sometimes we invite friends for food and drink. Get-togethers and such. And since we live outside city limits, I usually do it in the evening. You can't see smoke at night.

Organics
The Girlfriend makes it a point to feed the birds and little rodents that inhabit the backyard that leads into the Tucson Mountains. Even when she's on a contract outside the state, she'll harass me about feeding the birds and the bunnies. One time, I had a bag of left over dog food from a friend who had a dog but sold it. He was staying with us and got rid of the dog, but left the dog food. I didn't know what to do with it, so I spread it on the ground hoping the bunnies would eat shredded horse meat. I guess they did and so did the birds. I think we have the fattest birds within 300 yards.

When I'm not working, I'm cleaning house cuz I'm somewhat of a neat freak and my lil woman is the total opposite. A short person who cooks awesome food. I can't cook except for barbecuing stuff on the grille. So if there's leftover food that neither of us wants, we feed it to the birds, lizards, rodents, javalinas ... which I had a tussle with last night. They were eating parts of this huge watermelon I lobbed from the patio. I chased them off with this can of air horn blaster thingy. Now I have to repair the fence around the garden. Yay. Woopty doo.

Sometimes when the birds are in their feeding frenzy, I bring out my canvas chair and a bottle of water and just watch them. I think back to the days when these small birds were miniature versions of huge dinosaurs ripping away at flesh. And I get lost in thought with my bottle of water.

And then there's the fire ant hill in the backyard. What can I feed it? I'll have to research ant diet ...

Out here, chickens are obsessed with blood. They will pick anything with meat clean off the bone. Its crazy, I know.
