The Search for a New Job in the Land of Old Jobs

Posted 10-30-2008 at 03:33 PM by jjbradleynyc
Well, I'm job hunting. It's not that I'm out of a job. But it certainly feels like I'm not very much "into" my current job. Oh yeah, I'm still working--still collecting my check--but every day I come into work, I'm unfortunately wishing I had a different "gig" now, or in the pipeline.

I view the job boards daily--careerbuilder, monster, yahoo hot jobs, and local job boards. Oh yeah, and also Craigslist. I'm getting interviews. I've had 6 or 8 since early September. BUT, no luck yet.

I had a company LOVE me (so they said) back in late September, but then *boom* they said I didn't have enough "finance/accounting" experience for that spot. Whoa, hold up there. Wasn't I the one who was supposed to "call the shots" and "turn down" several job offers, as soon as I completed the interviews? That's at least what played out in my head. Then, reality sinks in.

It's a tough market out there folks. I read something that said a typical and average job hunt takes 4 months. FOUR MONTHS???!!! Yikes, I could starve in a week. Yet, 4 looong months one has to search and interview and be rejected and dig.

The thing I always wonder about is "what if I'd gone a different route in college?" Then, I wouldn't be "stuck" in a job I dislike at the present...I'd be loving my job! I'd be a career-grinding, work-loving, sacrificing worker who would put in 12-14-16 hour days--just because I LOVED my work. Well, I barely put in 8 or 8.5 hours, and then when I'm here 10 or 15 minutes past the time to head home, I'm like "get me OUTTA here."

Well, back to the search. Oh wait. I'm still at work, so back to work...at my old job. Only I'm hoping for a new one.
