Which handyman is better the national chain or a local company?

]Well I guess there are ups and downs for both. I will try to break down both of them and make a fair comparison between the two. Then the decision making will really be up to the customer that needs the service.
I"ll start with what I know of the national chains. The big guys will almost always have all kinds of insurances,so you can be a little more comfortable in the areas of damages and liabilities. The big guys probably will have more services to offer and will be able to cover more ground than your local handyman. The big guys will be able to pull permits because most of them will be state licensed contractors.
Those are all good things to consider when hiring someone to work on your home, but there are draw backs to the big guys the first is the price that you pay for the services. Most of the big guys are franchises. With that said it should be understood that even though the business may be locally owned there is someone else out there that is making a profit off the work that is done. Also the over head of maintaining all of the insurances and the advertising is way up there compared to your local Joe.So the price is almost always going to be higher than the local guys and some times even double.
The second drawback to the Big Guys is that they have a lot of employees. The owner of the company is not going to be coming by your house to make sure things are getting done right.Just some 9 to 5 guy that does not want be be at your house and is ready for lunch time so they can take break. The quality of work is not going to be as good.
Now for the local guy a lot of things are the opposite as with the big guys.
Most of them are not contractors they are handymen. So in most cases they will not be able to pull permits. So if your going to do a larger project you will have to pull the permit.
Next,a local handyman is just that " a man".Not a group of men that work for that guy.As a single person the handyman can do smaller jobs and usually do not have to rush to meet deadlines. They can take their time and do the job right.
The local guy needs your business and hopefully some referrals. So he is going to work hard for you to do a good job.
The biggest difference is going to be the price.A local handyman will have a lot less over head therefore he can charge less for the work that he does.
He usually will be more flexible about times and price.
Your local handyman is someone you can get to know. And maybe be able to call him a 10 o'clock on Saturday night when you have a pipe burst. You call probably talk to a real live person when you call also.
The work that you get from either one can be good or bad.It is hard to say what you will get when you bring anyone in your home to do work for you.
Things to consider:

Things to consider:
- The local guy is a member of your community.Using him is helping your neighbor
- the big guys may get discounts on materials but they are going to mark them up so you are still going to pay retail or close to it
- The PRICE the big guys are sometimes double what the local guy prices are.
- With the local guy the one you hire will probably do the work.
- The big guy will send a salesman that will promise anything to get the job.But when the installer gets there those things might not be included in the job and will end up costing extra.
- ]Good luck
