A trip to Cumberland County, NJ

Posted 01-02-2009 at 09:05 AM by shannybannany
A recent thread on City-Data talked about the 21 counties of New Jersey. It asked out of the 21, how many had you visited.

Almost everyone (including moi) had never been to Cumberland County. I always wondered about it myself. I envision it as endless farmland, not so nice towns/cities (Vineland and Bridgeton come to mind) and otherwise just BLAH!.

But....there is something down on the western shore (that's a weird thing to say) that has always intrigued me. There are desolate areas along the Deleware river where years ago were home to a very prosperous oyster industry. Now I'm talking 100 years ago. A nasty blight wiped the industry out in what I *think* was the 1930s or so. I think the town is called Sea Breeze.

From what I understand, it is downright spooky down there. Only a handful of people live there and
it should be interesting. I'll update when I get back.

Would that spooky area on the western shore be Fortescue? Also, make sure you hit up the main street in Greenwich Township. It feels more like South Carolina than NJ. And the Greenwich pier nearby on the Cohansey.

Shanny, I googled Sea Breeze and, unfortunately, there isn't much about the town, currently or in the past.

You better get down to Seabreeze soon, the DEP is forcing the homeowners out.

I'm a little late on the topic, but we're considering moving to Fortescue. I was born and raised in Ocean County, but it's far too over crowded for me now. The taffic is horrible!
We currently live in North Central PA, but hoping to move home in two or three years when we retire. Looking for a place where we can walk to the bay for fishing.
