HISD- Kiddos w/ Autism- 6th grade

Posted 04-22-2013 at 02:36 PM by daddyworkhorse19

I came into work this afternoon and turned on the computer. The first thing I did was go straight to Google...for what...? Hmm...To continue the search for a school for my son who will be going to 6th grade next year. It feels like it was only a few years ago when my wife and I were looking for an elementary school for him. In back of my mind I let that sleeping giant sleep in hopes that the world and HISD would catch up with my son's challenging world. To this date I have been told that there are three schools that have what my son NEEDS (STRUCTURED LEARNING CLASS) to take him to that next step towards middle school...THE CATCH...we are only zoned to one school and the other two schools are out of zone and full!!!! Unfortunately the school that my son is zoned to FM BLACK MIDDLE SCHOOl. I remember going to that school for my middle school years and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. I will never forget the way the kids w/ special needs were treated....not by the staff...but by their peers. It was a horrible place to be, and vowed I would never send my child to that school. Now, I feel like I have my back against the wall and I have no choice but to send my son that school. Next week I have scheduled a tour of the school and I’m HOPING for some miracle change. It’s ironic how things work out sometimes…

Well I went in to the ARD meeting at Black Middle school full of anxiety and ready for dissppointment. After meeting with the school administration, district spec-ed coordinator and also the police officer assigned to the school...I feel a little more at ease.....I learned that they are trying to mirror Laniers Autism program and this year will be the first year for them to launch the program....the teacher to student ratio will be 6-1 and I was told that all the kiddos are on the same level...I encourage all parents to tour whatever school they send their child to....
