The Nebulizer Handbook

Posted 01-28-2009 at 08:55 PM by linicx
Between the rules and the tools the patient and family are usually in the dark.

The nebulizer is another piece of electrical equipment with a plastic line. It has a mouth piece that delivers a metered dose of liquid medicine in a mist.. Not all nebulizers are created equally. Some work well, most do not. The cheap models do not hold up to treatments four times daily for very long before they begtin to develope problems. The biggest problem my patent had was getting the medicne delivered properly through the mouth piece.

If the nebulizer is not working correctly, you will see liquid in the bowl of the mouth- piece, but no mist is being released. It is probably time for a new mouthpiece.

According to our home heath equipment provider it is supposed to be exchanged every six months, but at the end of one year you own it. What they don't tell you is they will replace it when it doesn't work - even if you do own it because you have to have it and You are their patient. We had to have three new nebulizer units last year. Only one worked correctly and longer than 90 days. Mini units are light and convenient for travel. The desk top units are the work horse. There has been no troble since the company moved my patient out of the mini and into the desk unit.

Before you worry about 'bothering' your equipment supplier, please remember your equpment is owned by them, serviced by them and supplied by them. They get paid to be bothered by patients. Never, ever struggle with a nebulizer or concentrator that does not work because your life depends upon their equipment working properly. And your supplier knows it. All suppliers provide 24/7/365..

Be patient. Sometimes it takes a while to get patient and equpment adjusted to each other. It only happens once.
