Curmudgeons of the World: UNITE!

This post is curmudgeonly. I am curmudgeonly in many of my views. My mom sometimes called me a curmudgeon when i was in my early 20s, yet another example of her keen insight into the human spirit (she was most-definitely not a curmudgeon: more of a free-spirit, reluctantly caged by society's mores of the day).

I am reminded of the above while searching for latest by my favorite non-fiction author, Charles Murray. Murray is definitely a curmudgeon, by his own admission. Not hard to understand, based on the intellectual preciseness and implacability of many of his most Libertarian conclusions in various published works. I've seen him grow a bit snippy in interviews, too, when challenged by what he interprets as (my phrase) "deliberate obtuseness" in not understanding what he's trying to convey.

So without going too far down this gilded path, let's be a bit tongue-in-cheek and introspective about ourselves: hey, it's spring, I hope the weather is improving in other parts of the U.S. too (PacNW is definitely having a nice first day of spring). A curmudgeon quiz, made up just now:

Do you make rather quiet and somewhat "unfair" judgments about people, and hold grudges? All done with a smile, in corporate America? Do you grouse a bit about people and their tomfoolery, knowing in your heart "they should know better" ("they" being subjectively anyone you find acting in a way you don't approve-of)? Do you craft up sharp retorts to nutty (to you) positions espoused by others on C-D Forums, and publish them (or better yet, DON'T publish said-retorts, hopefully?).

(Yeah, I'm pretty much "yes" to all the above.)

But not today: it's such a nice day, I've suspended my curmudgeonly-ness. How about you?
