The first idea is the idea of closed and open geometries, a sphere is a closed geometry it has a boundary or a edge there is an inside and an outside. A sphere has no top or bottom no beginning and no end if I am an ant on its surface I can wander around it for ever with out stopping. . An infinite plane has no edges no boundary. In the 20th century, physicists found a way to make time part of a 4 dimensional vector space by making it equivalent to the three spatial dimensions we are alredy familiar with. The mathematics is taken from imaginary numbers (xiy) and the four dimensional space is r,and two angles (real component) and ct (the imaginary component). When you do complex arithmetic with this you get special relativity and this was the great intellectual achievement of Albert Einstein. A lot of the things we have learned since 1905 like the universe has a universal speed limit (the speed of light c), the fact that galaxies are speeding away from us and their light is doppler shifted (red shift), the fact that there is a maximum red shift and the red shift varies in a linear fashion (i.e. the galaxies closer have smaller red shifts than those farther away, and that this indicates the cosmos is 13.8 billion years old. Recent observational work shows that their is a limit to the objects we see and that the oldest objects are 13.8 billion years old. All this stuff indicates that the universe is a closed system in a geometric sense which makes it an object in the same geometric class as a sphere. So be intellectually courageous and appy the matematics and the axions that apply to a sphere a 4 dimensional sphere. A property of a sphere is it bas no top or bottom.
Think of the cosmos as acting like a bubble in a glass of beer. The bubble appears in the beer and rises. Before it is created there is no bubble it does not exist. Space-time was created like our bubble they did not exist exist before it was created but after it was created there is now the bubble which goes on its merry way. So space-time and everything in our universe all the enery and mass which we treat like space-time using the same type of mathematics and geometry (When Einstein did this he got general relativity and the effect they have on space-time which gives us gravity and another piece of physics a relative between energy and mass E=mc**2)) . The universe behaving as a bubble gives a cosmos that was created from from nothing which Steven Hawking argued in a recent book he wrote on this subject and how to view recent ideas in cosmology. The fact that Einsteins contributions are the foundation of much of our new technology like nuclear weapons, lasers, particle accelerators and what we see with our eyes through things like the Hubble Space telescope or the experiments at the LHC give Einsteins ideas great credibility.
