I just had the strangest thing happen. My life is so wrapped up in my computer, and especially my email.

I have been online since late 1993. I have missed most of the virus/trojan horse/worm problems because I have used Macs since 1989. I don't think a whole lot about bad things happening to my computers, b/c no matter what has occurred (had one hit by lightning) . . . I have been able to recover data . . . and move on. Macs are the haven for people who like "work arounds" . . . I have only had to call tech services for help one time in all these years! Most of the time, whatever happens, I can get someone to help me on a Mac forum . . .

But after lunch today, I returned to my computer to edit some work from a client . . . and as is typical - checked my email.

And only six messages (all of which had come in since 1 pm) pulled up. No scrolling back.

My entire IN BOX was . . . well . . . GONE. My OUT BOX is still intact. But my IN BOX . . .

Now to many of you, perhaps this would not feel like such an incapacitating event . . . but I subscribe to probably 50 or so journals . . . and also track things (shipping info) using email . . . and depend on my IN BOX as something akin to a diary. I can tell you what was going on in my life on Jan 3, 2007 by just checking my IN and OUT boxes.

And now it is all gone. All the business stuff . . . all the notes from friends/family . . .

<POOF>

I feel paralyzed and for once, have no clue what to do. I have checked every setting possible . . . done a search . . . and NOTHING. Even the trash is empty.

I use Eudora so there is no automatic archiving feature (or if there is, I surely have never bothered to find it, Hee Hee) . . . it was pretty much WYSIWYG . . .

Now what?

And where the heck did nearly two years of email go????

I would email or call your "email host" (Eudora?). They should be able to get your inbox back on track. I hope...

We use Carbonite for our computer/laptop. They save everything for us (email, pictures, files, etc.) in case we lose anything. You might want to consider looking into it. Brings peace of mind for me because my journal and all our pictures are on our computers.

Hope you get your emails back.

I'm so sorry, Ani! I couldn't help you with anything since I'm not a Mac user, but I do take everything out of my Inbox after I read it if I have to save it. I created other folders to Move them into. So far (knock on plastic!) I have not had the same misfortune yet. I feel the same way when I lose a contact list, or my favorites. Is there a *.pst file somewhere (or the equivalent) saved on your harddrive like Outlook would in a PC?

Have you posted this in the Science & Tech forum?

I would visit the Endora site for a FAQ area for problems. I would suspect that all mail is contained in one file, and since your outbox is intact, your inbox contents may be saveable.

In the future you might want to think about using Gmail. You can set up Endora or any other mail client to use it as you do your current email. But there will always be a copy of everything sent/received on Gmail server, and accessible from anywhere you have internet access.

I receive all my mail through Yahoo since my mail went down in March. I can receive or send but not both.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I was able to retrieve all my emails! WOOHOO!!! Little did I realize that my Mac has been archiving all my email in Mac's own program. I had never officially set this program up but SOMEHOW (thank the computer gods!!!) my mail was being saved . . . so even tho I lost my Eudora email inbox, I do have copies of everything!!!

I LOVE MY MAC!!!!!!! Thank you, Steve Jobs!!!!!

    Hey, Sunny!

Turns out . . . your suggestion is what I did. Luckily, I had actually turned on some feature (or my Mac had been set on it by default) and unknown to me, Mac's own mail system had been transferring all my Eudora mail to the Mac mail in the background!!! So I discovered (eventually) that even tho I truly had "lost" and never did recover my Eudora mail . . . copies were stored on my hard drive on my Mac!!! Woo Hoo!!!!

I got very lucky on this one. It has been almost exactly 20 years since I started using Macs . . . and I gotta tell ya . . . I LOVE MY MAC!!!!!

Ani, I don't use a Mac and this is an old article, but I thought I'd answer, too.

We do backups of our computers onto external hard drives.

Very large External hard drives are really inexpensive nowadays. They plug into your USB port (assuming Macs have one ...?) and we back up our entire computers using software we purchased. (I believe some of the external hard drives come with software, but I use something else.)

Anyway, these backups are a great thing when something happens.
