Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

KOKE-FM Taking The Bull By The (Long-)Horns

Posted 07-18-2015 at 06:36 AM by case44

I didn't see this coming. For about twenty or so years, the Texas Longhorn Sports Network had their flagship on Austin's KVET-AM (1300) and FM (98.1) and it looked like it would stay that way for a while. Thought that, come contract renewal time, they'd stay with KVET and iHeartRadio.

And then along came Bob Cole, KOKE-FM (99.3, 98.5, and 1490AM), and the Austin Radio Network.

I honestly don't know how they managed to pull it off, but they did. Texas 'Horn sports now have a new home. The new flagship? KTXX-FM (104.9), known locally as sports station 104.9TheHorn. They're the sister station of KOKE-FM and they'll now be playing the Longhorn football, baseball, and basketball games on stations all along the six-channel network. And Cole has had a longstanding relationship with the Texas Longhorns as a P.A. announcer for the Longhorn Band, as well as the Texas baseball team, so you know that he had to have had a hand in this new deal. So KVET is left in the dust, with no sports left on it. It is going to be a major blow to the AM counterpart, 1300TheZone, which had been Austin's leading sports station for many years.

You can only imagine Barbecue Bob Cole now getting everything he's wanted for his radio empire, and a big payback time directed at his old home, KVET-FM. He must have a lot of satisfaction now if he didn't before. And the Longhorns have a new radio home in Austin.
