Camping in West Michigan

Posted 02-16-2019 at 02:48 PM by GrandRapidsNative

Michigan has over 100 state parks and countless privately owned campgrounds and Grand Rapids is less than a 45 minute drive to arguable two of West Michigans favorite state parks in Holland and Grand Haven - both offering different types of camping as well as beautiful beaches and gorgeous hiking trails.

Holland State Park has great wooded sites or beachside sites and is arguably the most visited in Michigan. It’s also home of Holland Harbor Light - the lighthouse affectionately known as Big Red. Did you know Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state? Over 120 listed with our oldest being built in 1825 and that one is still active!

Grand Haven - AKA Coast Guard City USA - offers a different camping experience all together - typically referred to as parking lot camping - but don’t let that sway you! It’s a different experience but it’s right on the beach, next to the channel and a short bike ride in to downtown which is a great little area. How can you not want that? At night - can grab a blanket, park your butt on an open area of grass looking across the channel and watch the Musical Fountain - it’s a can’t miss if you’re in the area. You won’t be disappointed!

Honorable mention: Muskegon State Park. Also on the west side of the state with easy access to trails and the beach, the bonus here is that it’s open year round. A little snow and colder temperatures don’t stop diehards from camping!

Check out these parks and if you like what you see, you won’t believe what the rest of the state has to offer too!
