Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

An Oddity Needs To Be Changed On An Arkansas Highway

Posted 05-24-2019 at 07:59 PM by case44

Odd things tend to happen in the least likely places. How often, good readers, do you see the same exit number in two different locations on the same interstate highway................in the same state??

(Cue the "Jeopardy" theme song....)

Well, it's happening, all right. None other than Arkansas, too. You see, Interstate 49 is an up-and-coming corridor establishing an up-and-coming presence in the state right now. The corridor contains three portions at the moment. One portion is the former Interstate 540 stretch that goes from I-40 through Fayetteville and on up to Bentonville. Another is way down in the southern part of the state bordering Louisiana south of Texarkana. And a third stretch (currently signed as Arkansas 549, but will eventually become I-49) sits for a few miles southeast of Fort Smith.

Here is where things get sticky: That old 540 stretch? Why in the cornbread world have they not changed those mile markers to reflect the actual mileage from the Louisiana state line?? I-540 will not exist anymore north of 40, so don't you think Arkansas officials can give it the needed makeover?

Yes, it's time.

One oddity you will find through the current arrangement of I-49 is the location of two Exit 24s. That's right, sports fans. Exit 24 appears twice on Interstate 49 in Arkansas. There's the one that is going to count, and that's the exit at Ferguson Crossroads, near Texarkana. The other one, however, should no longer count, and that's the northern exit at Rudy, which ought to get milepost two hundred and something when all is said and done. As crews widen the freeway further north in Fayetteville-Bentonville, this change seriously needs consideration.

While I'm considering taking a trip up to that region within the next two years, it'd make more sense for mileposts to be in better sequential order. Arkansas officials had better be cognizant of this and make it happen.

To now, I have not seen any articles regarding milepost changes. If anything changes, then I'll keep you posted.
