Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Scattershooting / Waving Goodbye To Globe Life Park

Here we go with more Scattershooting for the masses out there in readerland. Kind of like a phrase from an old beer commercial, "If you've got the time, we've got the beer...." I may not be Miller beer, but I'm sure to give you a column that will fill you up as well as taste great.

********

I'll get a chance eventually, but Ol' Case really needs to save his money. Better not wait too long, because Globe Life Park as a baseball palace won't exist as such after this season. Even though the new Globe Life Field will be a good place in its own right, there's still something very special about the current Globe Life Park. It still has a great vibe, an ambience that says, "This is baseball" to a lot of people. It is still in reasonably good condition, and it's just too soon for this park to go bye-bye.

If only Tom Schieffer, the Texas Rangers' former president, had decided to put a roof on this palace....

Well, he chose not to for nostalgic reasons. As a result, The Ballpark With Four Different Names now has to give way to a venue with air conditioning. You have to be practical. Houston got it right when Minute Maid Park first came on the scene, as any Texan knows that it's going to get hot in the summer time. And Arlington is also in Texas, so, therefore, it gets hot there, too. The Rangers, nonetheless, have had memories in that place. They got to go to two World Series (but would lose both), garner seven American League West division titles, clinch one Wild Card berth, and nab two AL pennants during their stay at the current yard. I may not be the Ranger fan I used to be (as my exclusive allegiance goes to the Houston Astros), but Globe Life Park is a national treasure, one not to be forgotten in baseball circles. That money I mentioned will go into the final tickets for that final visit to Globe Life Park for one more Ranger game.

Memories. For a once-hapless franchise that I still regard as "the Cubs of the American League", they deserved a good run in a good baseball home. GLP, we'll miss you!

So Dallas has a new mayor. It's Eric Johnson. No, not the reincarnation of Erik Jonsson, the 1960s-era Dallas mayor who guided the city through a gigantic healing process after Jack Kennedy was assassinated downtown, and who was also instrumental in helping get Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport up and running. The city of Big D now has Eric Johnson. I may not know much about him, and he didn't appear to get many ringing endorsments from past mayoral candidates.

Perhaps it should be noted that, in mayoral races, people don't think much about Democrat or Republican when voting because you hear more about the issues a city faces and what that candidate intends to do. Cities in the United States need conservative mayors because of a better track record. We've all seen what liberal mayors have done or are doing to their cities, and it's not a pretty sight. The outgoing Mike Rawlings could not get Dallas' rising crime rate under control. I saw what sign Eric Johnson had for his party: Democrat. Not encouraging. When will a conservative mayor win in Texas again??

Makes you long for Erik Jonsson to come out of the grave and work his magic one more time.

Former Boston Red Sox first baseman David Ortiz was shot yesterday in the Dominican Republic. Word is, he's in stable condition and on the mend. Big Papi was one of baseball's all-time greats. Heal up fast, big guy!

That small freeway on Fort Smith, Arkansas' southeast side will one day be part of the Interstate 49 artery from Kansas City down to New Orleans. When it does happen, and when more of the Chaffee Crossing development in which it crosses gets built further, one only wonders how the hotel situation will play out there.

Just for fun, case44 decided to come up with predictions for what hotels might be built in that area. I-540 near the city's center already is mostly built out with lodging, so I-49 is poised to have new opportunities come their way. Here are a few of my predictions for Chaffee Crossing.

Hampton Inn & Suites
Best Western Premium to Plus
LaQuinta
Embassy Suites
Hilton Garden Inn
Residence Inn
Holiday Inn Express
Comfort Suites
Microtel
Springhill Suites
Fairfield Inn
Wingate

Don't laugh. That corridor will one day be a destination beyond anything anyone's imagined. Check back with me in about ten years.

Wakeland High School's band (Frisco, TX) already has an opening for an assistant band director. Oh, it's got to be filled by now, but we don't know yet who it is. Incumbent top assistant Ashton Seneca is reportedly out at WHS, meaning second assistant Kevin Jones will likely slide into her old spot. The position is likely for second assistant. We'll know soon enough who head director Tanner Smith picks. The band's marching show will be called "11", in honor of the famed Apollo 11 flight to the moon fifty years ago. Should be a good show.

And this fall is a state year for Frisco schools. Wakeland is the one school I expect back in San Antonio in November for the Texas State Marching Band Contest. Other Frisco schools such as Centennial and Liberty have been, but none have had the track record or consistency that Wakeland has had. Go Orange!!

How often do wild deer show up at restaurants for vittles? Guess one we spotted couldn't wait to place his order.

There was some big damage in North Texas, and this was not the work of a deranged deer. Weather in the area on Sunday was very violent, and gusty winds, some upwards of 60 miles-per-hour, ripped limbs off of various trees. You should have seen my apartment complex's parking lot, as many branches were scattered everywhere.

Numerous thunderstorms and showers, along with the gusty winds, preceded to wreak havoc just east of Downtown Dallas. A crane toppled over and collapsed on top of an apartment building, and one person (so far) was reported dead. Not a good day to be in Texas.

Some fortnights back, didn't liberals have a belief that the world was overpopulated?? Well, if that's still true, then I have a remedy for it. And here it is: Deport all illegal aliens from the United States. Problem solved.

And for the record, I don't think the world is overpopulated at all. As long as West Texas is as isolated as all get out, there is not a threat of too many people on Planet Earth.

Dallas TV news anchor Clarice Tinsley of KDFW-TV (Channel 4) has been on Metroplex television for four decades now. Station brass had recently made a decision to reduce Tinsley's airtime (Say what???!!) to just one hour per night.

Clarice is a legend and a pro, so she's going along with it, but one has to still wonder how she made it through that station's really bad days of the mid-to-late 1980s when there was a lot of disarray in that newsroom and poor management which prompted it. I'm surprised that she survived it, what with all the personnel moves in that day.

********

Speaking of surviving, did you see the Houston Astros win-loss record? Still chugging along with the AL's best record and tied (at this writing) for the major leagues' best. And this is without Jose Altuve, George Springer, and Carlos Correa, all out with injuries.

Love watermelon? Then you need to head for Luling, Texas, for that town's annual Watermelon Thump. Here's the link with more, and all that's cool in June in South Central Texas.

The NFL's Houston Texans have fired general manager Brian Gaine after just one season. It's a head-scratcher of a decision, as I thought he did just fine as GM. I didn't see anything particularly wrong with their recent NFL draft choices. At any rate, Gaine is out. Officials never specifically stated why they did it, but they apparently want to go another direction.

Shuttered buildings with no tenants are on the increase right next to Grapevine Mills Mall near Grapevine, Texas. I drove by this morning, and even the Chick-Fil-A, which had been doing very well, was closed. Not sure if it's permanent or if they're just remodeling, but the name was removed completely from the facility. This is another in a long line of consecutive buildings, all the way to the abandoned Golden Corral (with the exception of the Blue Goose Mexican Restaurant and the Discount Tire) with no tenants. And none are on the horizon, as I saw nothing new on Community Impact in the last week.

Not only is that happening, but new pad sites near that location have had ground broken for them. That will encompass more spaces to fill with business that isn't currently there. City officials need to get busy and court some people.

That's it from here for now. Keep cool this summer with some ice-cold lemonade. Be sure to save a glass for this writer, as he's just built up a thirst.

Thanks for dropping by. It's actually Case's Column, but I could have used corner years ago. I think another poster back then was using it, and, so, that may have been the reason I shied away from it.

Welcome to the forums and to the blog pages. Take time to feel your way around.

By the way, if you take a look at my entire blog page (or, in my case, part of it since I've written so many posts), I don't scattershoot in every column, just periodically. Many times, I just focus on one or two topics of interest per post.

Idle thought: If Pat Buttram were to get reincarnated, he'd come back as Stan Copeland, pastor of Lovers Lane United Methodist Church in Dallas. No joke. He doesn't look like him, but listen to the voice. I point this out because his voice sounds like Pat Buttram (Mr Haney??). Just listen to those broadcasts like I do on Sunday morning. He's on WRR-FM (101.1) every Sunday morning at 9:30.

Tassie, thanks for the good word. You'll have plenty of Case to read, as I've written more than 1,200 blog posts in the past eleven years. You'll be plenty busy.

Come on back when you're ready to write.

Sure will miss that place. I've actually heard a couple of broadcasters not long ago who said they won't. Okay, so it gets hot. Big whoop! That playing field and aura were what made that yard one of the best in the game for as long as it's been around. I had an attachment to that place just like with Camden Yards and the new Busch.

Heck, the new palace won't even have real grass! Ranger fans will cry foul next year.
