Awaiting Death

Posted 03-09-2009 at 09:38 AM by ArmyPoohFan317

It is said that in all the world that are a few things that non of us can escape: death, taxes and change. During my 26 years of life I have learned the wisdom of that. We are all in a constant sea of change, I pay my taxes and people ALL die.

Death is not an easy thing to deal with, even though it is so common. As a counselor I see how the stages of grief flow and I understand them, to a point, and as a Christian I believe that those that have accepted Christ as their Savior are going to Heaven when they die.

Even considering all of that, it is still hard to watch someone you care about die, and to know that there are people that love her more than I do, and pretty soon they will be in the throes of grief.

I sometimes wonder which is easier to deal with, unexpected death, or a prolonged death. Obviously if it is unexpected you may not have time to say good-bye, and you may regret the last words you said to that person. But a prolonged death is stressful and it is hard to watch someone you love suffer.

Since God created the world Man has learned much and we are able to do miraculous things. Things that people a 1000 years ago, or even 300 years ago, would consider miracles, are common place events. Yet, with all our knowledge and genius, we can't change the fact that we all die. Death is for all men, it is really an equal opportunity thief.

So how do we learn to deal with it? Do we just subscribe to the old adage, "Time heals all wounds"? Or is there something else? Obviously for us Christians, we have God to turn to, but I know this may sound like a lack of faith, but what about the times when doubt seeps in and God just doesn't seem enough? I KNOW deep down that Jesus is enough, He is my all in all, but watching someone die is just rough all around.

I guess one of the things that we can all do is to enjoy life. There is so much to do and enjoy while we are alive that we should make of the most of each day. With that said, I'm going to get back to accomplishing my Bucket List!

when my brother commited suicide seven years ago at the age of 15 (three weeks after his birthday) i would have said 'God isn't enough.' it is in grief that we are broken. learning to live a fulfilling life is easier said than done when you are dealing with fresh grief. there is not a magic pill to make you feel better. and you can't let anyone tell you it is time to move on. don't skip any part of the grieving process. it will only hinder healing. i did it for years and am finally finding peace. however, if it is someone you love that is dying slowly, think of what you would want to make your last few days/weeks/months/years memorable. peaceful. then do that for that person. take advantage of what you have left. death IS inevitable. but that is the great part. our reward awaits us. who would really want to be here forever? i love my life and i can't imagine not seeing my kids grow up or lying on my husband's chest everynight to go to sleep. but the idea of being reunited with the ones that i love and seeing Christ's face. meeting people i never knew but looked up to ... ghandi, abraham linclon, etc. but being in the glory of God is most refreshing. relish in those things when it is hard to think of anything but your own pain. think of this person's right to be free. how much they deserve to be hand in hand with Christ.
