I use the persistent pyrethroid treatment for shoes, jeans, jackets, and Picaridin on skin and other clothing. There are some new ones coming as well.

Best solution for ticks near your home is to make your curtilage not a good habitat for them and to take steps to reduce your local rodent (mouse, vole, chipmunk, etc) population.
