Woofing; Does anyone have any information about it?

Hey all,
I recently was talking to one of my good friends's parents and they were telling me about how their daughter had recently gone "woofing" in Alberta. Basically woofing is volunteering on a farm anywhere in the world. The owners provide room and board, and you volunteer on their farm in turn. I've always wanted to experience life on a farm, and this sounds like an interesting opportunity.
Does anyone know anything about woofing? Has anyone ever experienced it before? Is it safe? And where would I go to sign up?
Thank you for your time!
Until next time...

There's a web site called WWOOF - World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms which is all about worldwide volunteering on organic farms - helps people learn how to live in a more sustainable way, according to the home page, and lists farms, gardens and smallholdings that welcome volunteer help at certain times of the year. Wwoof USA is at WorldWide Opportunities on Organic Farms - USA (WWOOF - USA) but the first site talks about volunteering all over the world.
Cheers
