Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Astros Got A Good Deal At The Trade Deadline

Posted 08-03-2022 at 03:57 PM by case44

Looks like the Houston Astros are getting fully loaded again. Never mind that they were already deep, but there were some weak spots needing a little mustard.

Welcome to Houston, Trey Mancini, Will Smith, and Christian Vazquez!

Sure, it'll take a little time for all of them to truly get settled, but at least, Mancini got things roaring in his first start of the year and second at-bat as an Astro. He belted a two-run home run in the second inning as the Astros took care of business against the Boston Red Sox and kept them from getting swept by same for the first time since 2013. Vazquez has yet to get a hit, but just give him time. His defense at the catcher position will prove very valuable in the quest to get deep into the postseason, and then back to the World Series. And it also doesn't hurt that Vazquez has a ring under his belt already. He's seen plenty of playoff baseball. Then you have Will Smith, a much-needed lefty reliever who will give Manager Dusty Baker some late-inning options, and he's the guy who beat these same Astros last year for the Atlanta Braves. Mancini, meanwhile, will neutralize Yuli Gurriel at first base.

Things will sure be very interesting to watch as three important acquisitions brought in before the annual trade deadline will make a positive impact in H-Town. We'll miss Jake Odorizzi and Jose Siri, but that's all the Astros actually lost here. Playoff baseball is almost here where orange is king!

Oh, and it doesn't hurt that second baseman Jose Altuve just tied Craig Biggio for the most 4-hit games in Astros history in today's win.

Astros, all things considered, have done well so far with the acquisitions. The offense just needs to click and start picking things up. Bullpen has been faltering lately, but did well in Sunday's Atlanta finale. It's almost September.

So far, I think that lineup is looking good as a few guys are coming out of slumps. The Astros' pitching has been the difference all year.
