Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Tech Doing The Right Thing By Extending McGuire

Posted 12-28-2022 at 08:05 PM by case44

Basically, the Big 12 will have a new face. Yes, we've also got TCU and Baylor and will lose Texas and Oklahoma, but that's why I'm bringing the following up.

The Texas Tech Red Raiders football team decided to give Head Coach Joey McGuire a real go at it. They've signed him to a six-year contract extension. This gives not only Tech some stability and time to build the program up the way it should be, but also to give a reworked Big 12 a face of the conference. And if McGuire can work the same magic at the college level the way he did back at Cedar Hill High School (where they had a few state titles in their classification), then this will prove to be a good hire. Fans have to give this thing time. It won't be an overnight fix.

If nothing else, McGuire has bragging rights. The two big-time teams slated to leave the conference, Texas and Oklahoma, have already been beaten by McGuire's Red Raiders. Bodes pretty well, I'd think.

This came at the expense of my Longhorns.

    Lubbock fans, take heart:

Sorry for the delay in response. Had to return from a trip to Houston.

People have no idea how excited Tech fans are to have:

    A. A head coach who wants to be in Lubbock
    B. Someone who can recruit there
    C. Someone who can make great hires like DeRuyter, Kittley, and Blanchard

    (Among many other things)

Great things are happening with the best conference record since 2009, and the $200M football facilities renovation. Neither of those happen under the three previous coaching staffs.

People also don’t realize (or care I guess) how difficult it was to get at least four of the eight wins (UT, ISU, OU, and Ole Miss). UT & OU were OT games played in very hot and very cold weather, and both of course have very talented rosters. Iowa State was played in single-digit wind chill in Ames. Ole Miss did everything they could to try to out-trick Tech (past defenses would have folded quickly).

There’s still the possibility that key guys could leave, which is a given these days in CFB. Also, Tech fans have become accustomed to the unexpected bad things happening.

That said, things are looking better than they have in a very long time.

Hey, shoe! Hope you had a great time in H-Town.

Let's just be glad that Chris Beard wasn't still coaching roundball at Tech. Now, that would have been epically bad. I do believe McGuire is the man for the job, and this is coming from a Longhorn fan. Big 12 schools are going to have strong recruiting classes, and Tech will be no exception.

And, of course, Lubbockites are pausing to remember Mike Leach.

“The H” (its new nickname, apparently) exceeded expectations. Would recommend it to those who want a change of scenery that doesn’t break the bank, and this time of year is probably better than summer. It did get a little wet on Thursday, but even that was a welcome change from drought-stricken S.A.

No comment on the roundball coach.

McGuire & Co. just reeled in Tech’s highest-rated recruiting class since I think 2011, but some think that it may be better than that since they focused on the trenches more than that staff. There have been comparisons to the 2006 & 2007 classes.

The team did a tribute to the coach who was responsible for those last two classes, who of course is Leach. On the first offensive play, they lined up with the trademark wide splits on the offensive line. The referee called a delay of game, which Coach Kiffin, to his credit, declined.

One thing that always stands out in these bowl games is how the bands seem to be able to play more often than at home. The media relations guy at Tech says that it’s because people prefer the canned hip-hop/rock/country music to the Goin’ Band, but I tend to think that that’s overstated, since they can get all of that in their cars/phones/favorite restaurants/bars etc. You can only get college marching bands at the games themselves. Occasionally they might perform at HS contests, parades in San Antonio in April, or in the GB’s case, the 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in NYC (had to get that in somehow).
