Get that liquor out of my house!

Posted 07-28-2008 at 04:36 PM by Nomadicus
Back when times were easy and the most difficult things were having to stop play and get ready bedtime I remember a near tragedy at my grandmother's house on evening when an uncle (her first born) had came to visit. Now you need to understand that my grandmother was a simple minded person that was kind and considerate of all those in her family. She was a church going God fearing soul that believed in being your Sunday best 7 days a week. She totally despised liquor in any form. It was the works of the Devil himself. She tolerated my grandfather making his home made beer though as she got to use the discarded green beer bottles for edging around her flower beds. She understood about the need for a little wine for the stomach sake too. The last thing before retiring for the night was to take medicine size cup of Blackberry Wine. That was for her stomach sake. She really believed it was good for her and it must have been because she lived well into her 10th decade before her body decided it had put up with her long enough. Somehow she viewed her precious blackberry wine as a true medicine and not an alcoholic beverage to be enjoyed any other way. Now where the uncle fits in is the easy part. He had to drive in to town one evening and get a new bottle as grandmother was out. Now how was he to know that when the store was out of blackberry he would stir up a pre Armageddon when he brought a bottle of Concord grape home instead? He had unwittingly crossed a line that he never forgot. From the mistakes of others was the best way to learn some of life’s lessons, especially around my grandmother. Sometimes I can still her yelling so loud the the liquor store must have heard her, "Get that liquor out of my house".

I've been enjoying your photos and now just discovered your blog entries and read every single one. Enjoy your writing just as much and your stories of childhood memories.

Your grandmother's blackberry wine reminded me of when I was a girl heading into puberty, and my grandmother introduced me to the medicinal purposes of blackberry brandy for menstrual cramps. There must be something in those blackberries. LOL

my grand dad made muscadine wine and used it for medicinal purposes. I must say, it was strong and often smelled like whiskey. I remember being at their home and sick with a bad cold, now I was in my early 20's mind you, and my step-grandmother got out the jug of wine and poured me a tablespoon and had me take it...Oh my gosh, it burned all the way down, but ya know I slept like a baby that night and felt better the next day. I never went back there sick again though, that stuff was some foul tasting stuff!

Great story! I had muscadine for the first time a few months ago (livin' in muscadine territory), it has quite a bite. My great aunt used to have us stomp grapes because she bottled her own and all summer we would walk around with ankle socks and shorts or jeans because we had purple ankles and feet.

My grandmother also had a bottle of blackberry brandy as well a peppermint schnopps! Seems when you had stomach woes, you could take you pick. Thanks bringing back some good memories Nomad.
