Star Trek: A Critique

Posted 05-17-2009 at 09:50 PM by ArmyPoohFan317
On Saturday night I saw Star Trek with two other Trekkie fans. It was a fun evening in a nice cinema, so the amibiance was nice, and that is part of the movie going experience.

I don't want to spoil the movie for any other Trekkies out there that have yet to see the movie, so I will stick to generalities.

As many of us know before seeing the movie, a lot of Star Trek history has been changed. And even though they are going back in time to when Kirk, Spock, Bones and Scottie were all at the Academy they have updated the bridge of the Enterprise!

Things like the re-writing of history and updates to the Enterprise bothered me a little bit. It helped that I was aware of the changes going into my viewing.

Overall I would say the movie deserves an A-. It was well done, the casting was great and I enjoyed myself. I went into it with the mindset that this was an alternate reality version of Star Trek and letting myself think that helped me enjoy the movie. If you are a stickler for ST history you might give the movie a C or C+.

There were many humorous aspects to the film, as well as references thrown in that only Trekkies will enjoy, yet it seemed like just a fun, sci-fi flick that non Trekkies could enjoy as well.

I think that all Trekkies should see it for themselves. It is 2 hours and 6 minutes long, but it doesn't seem that long the time goes by quickly as you are drawn into the struggle and enjoy the inter-play between the characters.

"Live Long and Prosper" my friends!
