Pittsburgh, PA - mising my town!

Posted 06-08-2009 at 12:55 PM by hawkeyemom

20 years ago we moved to south-central Virginia from Pittsburgh, with our 4 schoolage children and lots of hopes and dreams. Everything is so different here in VA---But PA people are the best! If you've moved away, you know what I'm talkin' about.

Some people here are still in the civil war mode...still hate yankees, still rude to us and southern hospitality is not the way of life for them. Others are from other places like New York, N. J., Mass. and PA, and they aren't really very friendly either. It's as though they came here to get away from everyone. Still others are friendly, but different than I am. We don't click.

When we meet a transfer from Pgh., there is instant commaraudry! Steelers! Pirates!... This binds us all together. There are Steeler clubs, where people meet at a bar and watch the games, eat, drink and mingle. If we see someone wearing Steeler or Pirates caps, jackets, shirts, it's an instant conversation piece. "Are YOU from Pittsburgh?" "YES!!..." "Which part?"

When we go back to Pgh. once or twice yearly, we ride around to all the familiar places we've lived, and visit everyone we can..friends and relatives. Sometimes we yearn to move back but then we think about our grown children who we uprooted when they were little, and moved them here. They have made a life for themselves here, and we are part of it. If we moved away, we couldn't get to see them but once or twice a year. No.. ...We left our siblings 20 years ago to move here to take a job for my husband. We won't go through that again.

We are not physically or financially able to travel to PA more than twice a year. Thats not enough. if we had to travel back here, living there again.

We'll stay here and enjoy the milder weather and our children and 5 grands. After all, don't a lot of northerners move south to retire? Hey, we're already here!!
